St Francis' Religious Education (RE) Curriculum
Religious education in a Church School should enable every child to flourish and to live life in all its fullness. (John 10:10). It will help educate for dignity and respect encouraging all to live well together. Such an approach is offered through a commitment to generous hospitality, being true to our underpinning faith, but with a deep respect for the integrity of other religious traditions (and worldviews) and for the religious freedom of each person.
Due to the monoculturalism and high proportion of children of no faith in our school, we provide a curriculum, through which children will develop knowledge and understanding about different world faiths children ill be able to deepen their learning and understanding as world global citizens. This includes learning from people of different world faiths and educational visits, where possible for immersive experiences.
Through high quality teaching, our aims and objectives for the children are:
We plan a sequence of lessons in line with the Durham and Newcastle Diocese agreed syllabus. This includes following the Understanding Christianity scheme of work alongside agreed other world religious views and thematic units.
In order for children to learn the substantive knowledge of religion and worldviews, children learn through the disciplinary knowledge of:
We are always looking for opportunities for children to learn about different world faiths from people who are part of different communities and believers. By providing personal encounters and immersive visits to different places of worship
Enabling children to know more and remember more
Staff use a range of assessment methods to check what children have remembered before introducing new knowledge and providing learning opportunities that will help children build their knowledge and skills as theologians.
Teachers assess the knowledge and skills children have developed and these are reported on the Key Information / Ofsted and Performance page of our website. Click here.
